By this time, you should have figured out where your team stacks up against the rest of you league. Things will become very clear; you will now know where your team's strengths are. Always remember your team will have a strong offense or strong defense. It is very rare to have both in most youth leagues.
With that in mind you will want to build your program around your strenghts. If your offense is strong then you will want to keep them on the field as much as possible. Call plays that move the chains. You do not always need to look for the big play. If you offense can score and your defense is week, you will get into a high scoring game. You need to limit the amount of time that your defense must stop your opponent. Keeping your offense on the field will help keep your defense off the field. Drive the ball down the field moving the chains. If your offense does not score, your opponent will have a long field from which to score. This will help your defense and allow more chances to make a stop or maybe create a turn over.
Any game that gets into a shoot-out becomes out of control. If you are coaching to win, do not get into this kind of game. Coach your team and use your strength. Call plays that move the ball. This will take time off of the clock and if your offense is good, it will also put points on the board.
